Coonskin Caps are a fur cap made from the the skin and fur of a raccoon. These iconic caps were associated with American frontiersmen such as Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone.
They are also associated with explorer Meriwether Lewis who wore a Coonskin Cap during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Joseph L. Meek (1810–1875), mountain man, storyteller, and public personality, also wore the Coonskin Cap.
The Coonskin Cap was popularised again in the Mid-fifties with a Disneyland five part television programme starring Fess Parker who went on to star as Daniel Boone in a television series (1964-1970), again wearing a Coonskin Cap.
