A nautical cap turned fashion accessory
A Mariner’s Cap, with similar variants such as the Skipper Cap, Greek Fisherman’s Cap, Fiddler Cap , Breton Cap, Lenin Cap and Mao Cap, is a soft, flat-topped cap with a small visor. They are usually made from black or navy blue wool felt, but also occasionally from corduroy or blue denim.
The soft, unstructured crown of a Mariner’s Cap sets it apart from similar caps like the Peaked Cap and Maciejówka. It is frequently associated with seamanship and maritime settings, particularly recreational sailing, fishing, and yachting.
Instead of remaining a niche working accessory, the Mariner’s Cap has spread to the general public as a fashion accessory. It gained prominence in popular culture when John Lennon wore it during the British Invasion in the middle of the 1960s.
